Day 26
The restaurant days now seem to be doing that thing – sliding into each other as the things that were once strange start to feel routine. It now seems odd to think of the first day – when I walked into the restaurant not knowing what to expect – intimidated by all the strangers surrounding me. And now… I feel like I’m properly on the team.
I’m enjoying my days – I would go so far as to say, having fun! I’m speaking and understanding Spanish more and more every day and therefore more able to soak up the culture and banter around me.
As we were hunched over “cleaning onions” (what even is that?!) today, we spoke about all types of things, peoples handsomeness preferences, drinking habits etc etc. It feels so good to be able to chip into conversations and produce sentences in Spanish that actually make sense. And there are currently enough people in the kitchen that speak enough English so that I can ask for help when needed. And when Ellian says something that I can’t understand, I ask for a translation from someone else to English – which is actually helping me to understand his accent.
We got two breakfasts today! Ellian produced a large Tupperware lid full of fluffy pancakes (with sweetened condensed milk) which I ate out of one of our little tupperwares and then Dhalia popped out of pastry with fresh cinnamon bread for all! Delish!
And the highlight of the day – my parents have arrived! I managed to meet them for a 7pm dinner. What a treat!!!
Off to bed now.
